JANUARY 1995

TYGRAT DAM

Taylor County, WV

SCOPE OF WORK

C&W crews demolished the existing low-flow valves and cut a 16'x16' access hole through the 6' thick concrete downstream wall of the valve chamber. A new support frame was placed and a 58" diameter ring jet valve was installed. This process was done at two locations on the dam. Scaffolding on the downstream face of the dam allowed C&W workers to make cuts in the existing concrete around the old outlet valve. Pieces of concrete as heavy as 22,000 lbs. were excavated. C&W workers discuss the situation. Visible are the steel arch and multiple reinforcing bars which will support newly poured concrete.

  • The new outlet valve is lowered over the side.
  • The new outlet valve is secured into its final position.
  • The valve is function-tested for the first time.

Repair evolutions were documented by underwater video.

  • C&W workers pump concrete from a boom truck.
  • Another view of the pumping operations.
  • Barge-mounted lattice crane.
  • Divers suit up prior to entering the water.
  • Material and supplies are moved via barge-mounted crane.
